From reading accounts online it seems that in Basic D&D high death counts are the name of the game if played by the book. However, the rules for hirelings seem to help mitigate this by giving the PC's not only extra attacks, but also backups in case someone should met their demise.
In reading through Moldvay's basic book, it seems that the term 'Retainer' is used for an adventerous companion. You make a reaction check, he joins you, you provide a modest monthly fee, and he cuts a cut of his/her employer's treasure, and takes a half-share of the experience. all-in-all a pretty good deal for another character in the group. However, in the module B1 (which I presume is made with Basic D&D in mind) the back section makes a distinction between hirelings and henchmen. It's detail presumes henchmen are like the Retainers mentioned by Moldvay (based on CHA, fellow adventurers); while hirelings are simply around for 'a fee.' This seems to go in the face of the actual Basic rules which state that only Retainers (or henchmen if you will) will accompany heroes on an adventure, whereas hired guns (hirelings, mercenaries) will only serve as part of a larger force in a wilderness setting. I bring this up because I'm going to try my hand at DMing a basic game tonight and while no one in my group has really played basic D&D (or much else besides 3rd edition) they've all grown up with stories of the red-shirt-hireling. However at the prices quoted, it seems RIDICULOUSLY cheap to just outfit your party with half-a-dozen or even a dozen light or heavy infantry. who will have equivalent fighting power to the PCs; but whom share no part of the treasure, nor any part of the XP. all for like 3gp.
